Alternative Fueled Vehicles

Adherence to NASA Compliance Strategy and Goals

NASA Headquarters issued a comprehensive strategy dated December 2002 that describes the steps NASA will take in meeting the mandates of EPAct and E.O. 13149. Each CTO shall play an integral role in ensuring the goals are consistently met. See NPR 6200.1B.

Mandatory Use of On-Site Alternative Fuel Resources

Ideally, all Centers should have on-site alternative fuel facilities but this may not be feasible at all locations. Nevertheless, for sites that do have the capability, use of B20 bio-diesel fuel is required for diesel-powered vehicles and use of E-85 fuel is required in all vehicles that are designed for E-85 use. The use of fuel management key- or card-lock systems to enforce use of on-site supplies of E-85 is recommended where appropriate.

Use of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV’s)

Section 202 of E.O. 13149 encourages the procurement of innovative vehicles such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Centers are encouraged to use NEVs to fill inventory requirements where feasible. Vehicle users shall be educated on the availability of these resources and their benefits, especially as they relate to the EPAct and E.O. 13149.
