This directive establishes policy to ensure, to the extent possible, all NASA work environments, on Earth and in space, are safe, healthy, environmentally sound, and secure through compliance with all applicable Occupational Health (OH) laws and regulatory requirements, professional standards, and NASA program requirements across all program disciplines (i.e., Occupational Medicine, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Health Promotion Wellness and Fitness, Federal Workers' Compensation, Food Safety, and Employee Assistance).
a. This directive is applicable to NASA Headquarters and NASA Centers, including Component Facilities and Technical and Service Support Centers.
b. This directive is applicable to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), only to the extent specified in the NASA/Caltech Prime Contract.
c. This directive is applicable to other contractors, recipients of grants or cooperative agreements, or parties to other agreements only to the extent specified in contracts, grants or cooperative agreement, or other agreements.
d. In this directive, all mandatory actions (i.e., requirements) are denoted by statements containing the term "shall." The terms "may" or "can" denote discretionary privilege or permission, "should" denotes a good practice and is recommended, but not required, "will" denotes expected outcome, and "are/is" denotes descriptive material.
e. In this directive, all document citations are assumed to be the latest version unless otherwise noted.

a. The Chief Health and Medical Officer (CHMO) ensures the OH Program complies with all applicable laws and regulatory requirements, professional standards, and NASA program requirements, across all OH Program disciplines through evaluation, monitoring, and recommendations for continual improvement of each discipline's elements.
b. The Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer (OCHMO) ensures the NASA OH Program is effectively implemented and operated.
c. The Director, Health and Medical Systems, oversees the OH Program and ensures compliance with programmatic, statutory, and regulatory guidelines and policy.
d. Mission Directorate Associate Administrators ensure their organizations implement the NASA OH Program at the NASA Centers where they operate.
e. Center Directors ensure the NASA OH Program is effectively implemented, budgeted, and operated at their respective Centers.
f. NASA supervisors implement OH Program disciplines and facilitate employee participation to the maximum extent possible.
